Homemade baby food purées (advanced; part two)

Potato, broccoli, and cheddar mash in a bowl.
Golden potato, broccoli, & cheddar mash (Boil in water - 1 peeled and chopped golden/yellow potato and 1/3 cup frozen broccoli florets until soft. Drain. Mash with 1/3 cup grated white cheddar cheese and milk to your desired consistency). I don't like to puree potatoes as they tend to become gummy.

Ours twins are starting to move on to chunkier purées and some more finger foods now. They have entered the "Stage 3" baby food time. Now we are incorporating more textures.

They recently tried commercially available puffs and melts and enjoy learning to pick them up and feed themselves. They've also been trying more of our foods like chicken, roasted vegetables, turkey, and pasta.
However, they still are eating smoother purées, cereal, and yogurt as well. That's what they still eat the most of right now while they are learning to grasp and feed themselves more and more each day.

Homemade baby food in a food processor bowl.
Carrot, mango, & yellow bell pepper purée (Steam one cup of chopped carrots until almost soft and then add 1 cup frozen mango chunks and 1/3 cup chopped yellow pepper. Cook until soft and purée to your desired consistency using steaming water).

I refer to the above as "sunshine purée" because it's so bright and orange! Our twins like most fruit and vegetables they've tried so far, with the exception of rutabaga. That was a big no!

I make them a lot of bean dishes - black beans, white beans, garbanzo beans, etc. The majority of the time lately, I've been making up a single purée and then I just thaw them out together in my desired combinations.

However, sometimes I still like to make combo dishes like these, especially when I'm only using a small amount of one ingredient, like the bell pepper (mom and dad will eat the rest in fajitas).

Carrot applesauce in baby food containers.
Carrot applesauce (1-1/2 cups chopped carrots plus 3 peeled and chopped sweet apples cooked and puréed to desired consistency with the steaming water).

They love all kinds of applesauces/purées. I do make plain applesauce, but aside from the carrot above, we've tried raspberry applesauce, strawberry applesauce, blueberry applesauce, and lots of purees with an apple component. Sometimes I use pears in place of the apples.

Blueberry, spinach, and apple baby food puree.
Blueberry, spinach, & apple purée (1-1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries, 2-3 good handfuls of baby spinach, and 3 peeled and diced sweet apples steamed until soft and puréed to your desired consistency with the steaming water).

I'm continuing to try new and different textures as well. I guess as a foodie, it's super exciting and fun to see your babies try a new food and get a big smile on their face and grab for more. They will eat plain spinach purée no problem and that makes me happy. Next up, kale!

Homemade green baby food with quinoa.
Green vegetable & quinoa chunky purée (1 cup each of frozen broccoli florets, peas, green beans, and spinach boiled/steamed until soft and puréed to your desired consistency using the cooking water. Stir in 1/3 cup prepared quinoa [I grab some and set it aside when I make some for a meal]).

  3. Hi Amy, admire you for making great combos of purees for your babies. You should write a cookbook for other young mothers, I bet it would be a hit.
