Spider and monster face Halloween pizza

Halloween pizza topped with black olive spiders and monster face pepperoni.

Black olive spiders and monster faces made of pepperoni, green olives, and red onions make for super fun Halloween pizza toppings and a spooky Halloween dinner!

Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year and I love coming up with both sweet and savory recipes to create fun food around the holiday. One that I've been making for years (even before we had kids), is this pizza topped with black olive spiders and pepperoni monster faces with green olive eyes and red onion mouths.

Now that we have kids, they love this pizza as well and I usually make it the night before Halloween since it's a little time consuming. On Halloween night, we generally have Jack O' Lantern Cheese Quesadillas with tomato soup so that we can get out trick or treating right away before it gets dark.

It's also a fun pizza to make for a Halloween movie night with family or friends. It's perfect for any Halloween get together!

The amount of toppings for this recipe will vary depending on the final size of your pizzas and also your preference. You need a can of whole black olives that you will slice up into spiders as shown below. You won't use all of the olives, but you need whole ones, rather than pre-sliced olives, to make the shape of the spider bodies.

Put on as many spiders as you like on your pizzas, leaving room for pepperoni to make your monsters. It's up to you how you want to arrange them. Please remember that they don't need to be perfect and that some will likely tip over in the cooking process as the cheese melts. It's all for fun!

Next you need your favorite pepperoni, sliced green olives, and a little bit of red onion to make the monster faces. These, again, need not be perfect.

I try to make some different mouth shapes with the onion. Smiles, frowns, and "surprised" faces- this is where you can get a little creative and have fun. The small inside circles of the onion are perfect for this.

I like the color contrast with the green olives, but you can use more sliced black olives for the monster eyes, of you prefer. You can use white onions instead of red. If you don't like onions, you can also use thin slices of red peppers and cut them down to make a mouth.

Place monster faces around the spiders until you have enough toppings. Then bake and enjoy! I always serve pizza with salad or raw veggies and dip like ranch for a complete meal.

Spider and Monster Face Halloween Pizza

Spider and Monster Face Halloween Pizza

Black olive spiders and monster faces made of pepperoni, green olives, and red onions make for super fun Halloween pizza toppings and a spooky Halloween dinner!

Ingredients

  • prepared pizza dough (store bought or this is my favorite homemade)
  • coarse cornmeal, optional
  • 15 oz. can of tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 cups grated mozzarella cheese (can also use some provolone and/or Parmesan with the mozzarella)
  • black olives, pitted
  • green olives with pimentos
  • pepperoni
  • red onion

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees.
  2. Divide the dough in half and roll it out on a floured surface using a floured rolling pin into approximately a 12-inch circle if using pizza stones (or shape into a rectangle if using baking pans). Sprinkle the stones or pans with a little coarse cornmeal to help prevent sticking and then put the pizza dough on top.
  3. Spread half of the sauce onto each pizza (you don't have to use it all if it's too much), leaving about a half inch around the edge bare. Sprinkle one teaspoon of Italian seasoning and 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder over each. Then top each with half of the cheese.
  4. Cut the black olives in half lengthwise. Use one half for the body of the spider. Then slice the other half into 4-5 pieces, depending on the size of the olive. Use the end for a head piece and the others for legs (you want 8 legs in total, 4 on each side of each spider). Place these on the pizza as shown below. I put about 6-7 spiders on each pizza.
  5. Next, place pepperoni on the pizza in the gaps around the spiders. Slice green olives and use them for eyes. Then, thinly slice red onions to use for mouths. I like to make a couple of slices and pull out the center rings for some "O" shaped mouths and then also cut some slices for happy and sad faces. It's up to you!
  6. Bake the pizzas on the bottom rack for about 15 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese bubbly and browned. If using pizza stones or large baking sheets, you can bake one at a time, if needed. Or, place one on the bottom rack and one on a higher rack and rotate halfway through cooking.
